The fun part about shopping for the perfect car is test-driving all makes and models. And we’re on the road again, this time with a hybrid. The car of choice? A 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid courtesy of the team at Lester Glenn Subaru Toms River. This crossover/SUV silently screams all-terrain. And we’re screaming with it.
Upon driving it, we could immediately understand why Subaru owners love their cars so much. This Crosstrek Hybrid is a sporty crossover that’s at home in any location, whether traveling down the Garden State Parkway en route to Cape May or out camping in the woods. And because the Crosstrek Hybrid has all-wheel drive, adjustable cargo space, and a high 8.7 inches of ground clearance, it’s easy to take a trip off the beaten path (or onto the beach at Island Beach State Park). The only thing the Crosstrek Hybrid lacks, that come standard with the regular Crosstrek, is eye-catching, five-spoke alloy wheels. But that’s ok.
There are a lot of things that we like about the Crosstrek Hybrid. An appealing feature of the car is that Subaru builds its Crosstrek Hybrids in a zero-landfill plant, meaning that all of the facility’s waste is either recycled or converted into energy. Pretty cool, right? It’s nice to know that a company’s commitment to the environment extends past fuel efficiency and emissions.
Speaking of fuel economy, Subaru boasts that the Crosstrek Hybrid is the most fuel efficient hybrid crossover in the country and that it also releases the least emissions, which is certainly an added bonus when shopping for a car. According to Edmunds, cars need a combined MPG of at least 30 to be considered fuel-efficient. The Crosstrek Hybrid gets 29 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on a highway, meaning the car has a combined MPG of 33.
fueleconomy.gov, a website run by the Department of Energy, states that the average 2014 car gets 23 MPG. Considering that the average price for gas in New Jersey is $3.57, which is lower than the national average but up from a year ago, high gas mileage is a must-have. And it turns out that the Crosstrek Hybrid’s 33 MPG will save owners $3000 on gas over a five-year period.
