On December 7, the Bergen Equestrian Center is inviting the community to take holiday photos with their horses. It’s a festive, feel-good experience where every dollar supports free equine therapy programs for individuals navigating life’s toughest challenges.

If you’ve been looking for a holiday photo idea that feels more meaningful than a quick snap in front of the tree, this one blends seasonal charm with the chance to truly make a difference. Families, couples, friends, and animal lovers can pose with one of the center’s gentle horses between 11 AM and 4 PM, choosing from props like wreaths, Santa hats, or Hanukkah décor to match their celebration. A suggested $35 donation unlocks the experience and helps sustain the center’s emotional wellness programs.

Where Wellness Meets the Warmth of the Season

The Bergen Equestrian Center, located in Overpeck Park in Leonia, is home to Our Stable Life, an equine-facilitated therapy program that has been serving the community since 2012. Founded by Associate Counselor Anna Gassib, the program specializes in trauma-informed, Gestalt, and Person-Centered therapies for people coping with challenges such as PTSD, anxiety, addiction, grief, domestic violence, and emotional stress.

The team at Our Stable Life collaborates with local organizations including the Women’s Rights Information Center, Bergen Family Center, Bergen County Spring House, and Covenant House of Newark. Their work is rooted in the belief that the presence of a horse can help people reconnect with themselves—mind, body, and spirit—in ways traditional talk therapy alone often can’t.

Our Stable Life also played an essential role in the Man O’ War Project, a partnership with Columbia University Irving Medical Center that pioneered research into equine-assisted therapy for veterans recovering from PTSD. Their programs continue to serve individuals of all ages seeking a supportive, restorative path toward healing.

A Picturesque Setting for a Purpose

Spread across 22 acres just minutes from the George Washington Bridge, the Bergen Equestrian Center feels like a peaceful retreat tucked inside North Jersey. The facility features indoor and outdoor riding arenas, air-conditioned tack rooms, a heated lounge with panoramic views of the indoor arena, and a community of more than 75 horses.

While well known for its riding programs, Bergen Equestrian Center’s heart lies in the emotional wellness work that takes place every week, made possible through community support and events like this year’s holiday photo day.

Make It a Memory

Whether you’re hoping to create a standout holiday card, start a new family tradition, or simply enjoy a quiet, meaningful moment with a beautiful animal, this one-day event offers a unique way to celebrate the season while giving back.
