Dancing with Myself

There’s something about autobiographies… as excited as one might be to read a narrative from their favorite artist or celebrity, sometimes it takes an extra breath or two before diving into one. The instant intimacy… it can be a little daunting at first. What’s on the cover, too, plays a part. Take Billy Idol’s autobiography, Dancing with Myself. His punk, Mona Lisa smile/sneer says, “Come on, read what I have to say… I dare you.” But if you catch the photo from a different angle, you can see the inner boy. The photo speaks volumes, and we congratulate William Broad aka Billy Idol on his first entry into into the literary world with such a smashing book. We hope that will be followed by more. One per year, Mr. Broad? Ok with you, Love?

Dancing with Myself Tells All

We’ve just came across Dancing with Myself recently (it was issued in 2014), and we’re so glad we did. Mr. Broad takes us behind the scenes of his iconic videos, his famous songs, his loves, and his excesses. From his childhood to life today, Mr. Broad shares his experiences — the good, the bad, the ugly.

At the onset of the book, Mr. Broad doesn’t hold back. It’s just his style. He tells you up-front to what depth he will take you.

Not for the faint of heart; some parts are rated R, some XXX.

A Splendid Writing Style

William Broad is a voracious reader, and we are the beneficiaries — his writing style is beautiful and eloquent. He is a fan of world history and he peppers his writing with quotes from the wisest of individuals that have influenced him throughout his life.

Authenticity. Passion. Love. These are the main ingredients in Dancing with Myself.

In an interview, Mr. Broad shares that he took 6 years for this book, as he wanted to get the writing style just right. Writing, he says, gets him high as a kite. Yes, writing (and reading) takes you to a place that makes you feel good. We are huge advocates for both endeavors… and they both make you smarter. All the more reason, right?

Thank you, Mr. Broad for writing this book, and sharing the punk, rock world of the 70s, 80s and today. It was a great read, and we want to see and read more! Please, do that for us, ok?

Dancing with Myself is available from local libraries or you can buy it from Booktowne. A fun activity to do when you read the book is to catch some of Billy Idol’s videos when you get to that part of the book.

Love it!

Ever see this video? When was the last time you heard Billy Idol’s Sweet Sixteen song? So beautiful!

Until next time! Peace!
